LIFESPAN: 80+  years.
HOUSING: 36" x 30" x 36" MINIMUM cage with daily exercise or larger cage/aviary.
PET QUALITY: Very good to excellent - best suited to experienced persons.
SIZE: Medium-large size parrot approx 24"     400 - 800 grams

EXTRA COMMENT: Umbrella cockatoos are often especially cuddly.  They can be very LOUD and this must be considered before adding one to your family. They are also 'dusty' (as are other cockatoos)  and persons with asthma or allergies should consider a different type of parrot or consult with their doctor before bringing a cockatoo home. They can make wonderful companions and require a great deal of attention and space. They also require  proper diet, lots of toys, frequent baths ... and lots of love & patience.

The Umbrella Cockatoo - also known as the White Cockatoo is a well-known cockatoo originating from Indonesia. They are generally a very social species and have a long lifespan of approx. 80 years or more. Without a proper diet and exercise their lifespan may easily be cut short. Often times they can be fussy eaters, choosing their favorite treat from the bowl and ignoring the rest. I have noticed my cockatoos adore corn, and while corn may not be the most nutritious food available, I am able to add various vitamins and supplements to the corn to be sure they are getting the best possible nutrition.  Sprouted Seeds are extremely nutritious and can be lightly drizzled with melted organic peanut butter or orange juice (or other favorite taste sensation) to entice your cockatoo to eat a healthy diet.
Umbrella Cockatoos are beautiful parrots who often form an especially close bond with their human companions. It is important to teach your bird to amuse itself by offering numerous toys and showing your bird how to play with them. Avoid treating your new cockatoo as a 'novelty' when you first bring him/her home. Sometimes when the excessive attention wears off the birds feels rejected and may start screaming or plucking to get your attention.

Your Umbrella cockatoo depends on you to help keep him/her happy and healthy. Bathing is an important part of your bird's needs and should be taken seriously. Birds have different ideas of what a perfect bath is to them and it's up to you to figure out which one your bird prefers... or to teach him/her how to bathe.

Offer a large shallow dish of water.... and continue to offer this dish 3 times per week even if your bird doesn't use it. Try a gentle spray from a garden sprayer or hand sprayer.... be sure to make this a fun experience for your bird. Some birds like a shower-perch and will enjoy this time if you teach them - a little bit at a time - to have fun.

Be sure to offer this bath early in the day - in a warm place - where your bird can safely dry before he/she catches a chill. You Umbrella cockatoo should get quite wet at least once per week....and this will help keep them clean and also provides them with much needed preening time

Their 'First Kiss'
All cockatoos can be very LOUD, messy and are dusty - and some will develop screaming. plucking or feather-chewing problems. These are reasons why many Cockatoos are put down in lonely basements, re-homed or given up to sanctuaries.

They are Beautiful, Soft and cuddly but it is important to consider all the aspects of ownership before bringing any parrot into your life.

Umbrella cockatoos are intelligent and become bored quickly if left alone in a cage. It is your responsibility to provide a stimulating environment with natural perches, lots of chewing exercise, a variety of toys - including foraging toys.
Umbrella Cockatoos love to spend time out of the cage with their favorite people and will also enjoy a play-gym or other suitable play area. T-stands, boings, safe tree branches, safe-rope-climbers all provide exercise and stimulation to keep your pet happy and healthy as well as providing you with hours of entertainment watching your pet play.

Buy the largest cage you can afford and be sure it is durable and easy to clean. Powder-coated cages are good and stainless steel, although more costly, is the #1 choice. Stainless steel cages last a lifetime so are really a good deal for the money and are safe for your bird.

Your Umbrella cockatoo should visit an Avian Veterinarian twice per year for a well-bird check.
I prefer not to trim wings but you may discuss this option with your Avian Vet.
Be sure to choose an AVIAN Vet for your feathered companions. An AVIAN Veterinarian is specially trained to deal with birds.

With regular check-ups your Vet will be able to detect any changes in appearance or weight that may very well save your pet's life.

Trained early - and properly - your Umbrella cockatoo may be trained to wear a harness. Your birds should always be safely contained when outside. Even a bird with clipped wings can easily be lost outside.
