(Pyrrhura molinae)
Green Cheek Conures (GCC) - are amazing feathered companions! Males and females are identical and need to be DNA sexed to determine sex (unless yours happens to lay an egg... then you can be pretty sure she is female... )

There are so many reasons why Green Cheek Conures make great companions. They are a perfect size at approx 9" - 10" including their long tail, making them suitable for most homes. They are 'Pyrrhura' conures which are different than the 'Aratinga' conures which are well-known for being rather loud. Green Cheek Conures are much quieter.
Baby Green Cheek Conures
Green Cheek Conures can learn to talk (mimic) and sound a bit 'funny' when they do. Their speech is a little 'squeaky' and it is comical to say the least. "Comical" is a fitting word for them.... as well many owners of Green Cheek Conures will refer to their bird as a "Brat" because they (the birds not the owners) have tremendous attitude! They know what they want and they know how to get it.

They LOVE bathing and will do it almost every day if you offer a suitable dish. They are very clean birds and do not have the same 'dust' that Cockatiels, Greys or Cockatoos have. They may not be as clean with their food however and love to dunk their fruits and other foods in their water. This habit of 'making soup'  makes it extra-important that you clean the water dish several times per day.

"Mutation" is a word that can sound a bit like some monster from a movie but all it really means is that the color has been changed from the original or 'wild' color. The NORMAL color of the Green Cheek Conure (GCC) is pictured to the left.
One "Mutation" of the Normal Green Cheek Conure is the CINNAMON pictured to the right. The 'mutation' birds are exactly the same as the normal GCC in every way except color. A deeper study will explain that a cinnamon mutation is a sex-linked genetic but we won't go too deep here, we'll try and keep this simple.
If you wish to read more - here is a link to get you started:
CONURE GENETICS
(you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader)
Another "Mutation" pictured to the left is a YELLOW-SIDED conure. Still just a variation of the Normal Green Cheek Conure. They are more colorful and as the name suggests, they have yellow sides. A great web site for more information on mutations is Feathered Imps Angie has some amazing photos and information!! It's well worth visiting her site!
For the Adventurous person interested in  "Mutations" you may find the CONURE MUTATION CHART a valuable tool. (you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader) It shows clearly what offspring to expect when breeding certain mutations.
Once you've learned the basics you may wish to add a PINEAPPLE conure to your family. (Pictured to the right)  They are every bit as charming as the GCC but are a different brilliant color. They do indeed resemble 'Pineapples' in color. Breeders know they are a combination-breeding result of the mutations cinnamon and yellow-sided.  Pineapple conures are normally more costly since they are rare and it can be 'tricky' finding males (because of sex-linked genetics involved). No matter how you look at the different colors, I'm sure you'll agree they are all beautiful.

It doesn't end there.... if you do your own research and follow the links above you will learn of even more rare and beautiful "Mutations"
Regardless of the mutation you choose, you can bet you will have a charming, playful little bird with an abundance of attitude. They are easy to care for but do require lots of toys and activities to keep them busy and happy. They are very intelligent and curious creatures.
They enjoy treats and will be happy to share your meals with you if you allow it. It makes them feel as though they are part of the family - or part of the 'flock' as it would seem to them, which is very important in the bird-world.
Just be sure all the food you offer is healthy.

They like fruits and veggies, some grains and pastas. Healthy cereals may be shared in moderation (many of them like Cheerios)... and many other foods.

Kalahari was bred by Jane at Homestead's Hatchery and Jane also took the time to personally enter Kalahari in a Bird Shows before sending her along to us…and we are pleased to report Kalahari brought home some Ribbons and Trophies.  Jane raised Kalahari with remarkable care and it is obvious she received a great deal of love along with her excellent care.
