Good Bird! A Guide to Solving Behavioral Problems
Genesis Aviaries bands baby birds with a closed, coded band from the
Avicultural Advancement Council of Canada
This is an excellent means of identification, proving age and origin of the bird as well as providing a way to trace your bird if s/he should ever go missing.

Genesis Aviaries unique BAND CODE is "ACME"

Genesis Aviaries is a long-time member in good standing with the
A.A.C.C.

Properly-sized, coded, closed Leg Bands
are SAFE;  they offer comprehensible evidence that the bird was raised by a reputable, knowledgeable breeder and provide registration and identification.

The
myth that bands are not safe originates from inexperienced persons who do not band with proper size bands or provide dangerous environments with objects with which their bird may be trapped or injured.  Your bird may safely wear this band for his/her entire life.

Birds housed in poorly constructed homemade aviaries may run a risk of catching a leg band on loose wire or other objects and care must be taken to provide a secure environment. The leg band should by no means be a problem in an appropriate aviary or cage with safe toys. Birds should always be supervised when outside the cage for numerous reasons.

A bird with a proper band has proof of age and origin and is therefore a safer purchase than birds with open bands or no bands. Unfortunately there are a few unscrupulous persons who will sell a very old bird and claim the bird is quite young – without a proper band you will never really know.

A proper band is invaluable to Aviculture in breeding to help prevent inbreeding. If records are kept, brothers and sisters can easily be spotted and caution can be exercised to avoid pairing these birds.

Here at Genesis Aviaries, we take great care to properly band each and every baby, we record it’s Hatch Date, Band Number, Parents, Mutation and any other factors deemed important to that particular chick. Records are stored and kept indefinitely so they can be easily accessed if/when someone needs to search their bird.

CLOSE-BANDED?
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
IS IT SAFE?
Baby birds are banded when they are still very small - depending on species - at approx 7 - 10 days. When a baby is successfully banded will also depend on the individual chick's size and weight. Their toes are pliable - like wet noodles - at that age and it is easy to slip the band onto their foot. The chick grows and bones strengthen - leaving the band firmly in place.

A reputable organization such as The Avicultural Advancement Council of Canada offers a band size chart and clear instructions on how-to-band. You must be a member to buy bands and numbers are registered with the organization. When using coded bands, new bands must be purchased each year because they are color coded and dated. I feel these are the best bands to use since they are registered and provide proof of age. We use closed, coded, aluminum bands for most birds but sometimes choose stainless steel bands. I have purchased a few unbanded birds and I use the open bands for my own identification purposes.

Import bands are round wire stamped with a number. They are difficult to trace and often meaningless except to show the bird was an import. This isn't even accurate because import bands are open bands.
