Sun Conures are amazing in so many ways. They arrive in this world as tiny, almost-naked bundles of joy and develop into one of the worlds most brilliantly colored parrots. They are a perfect sized parrot, just a little bigger than a handful about 12inches from their head to the tip of their long tail. They are greener as adolescent birds and develop their gorgeous adult plumage after their first molt.
Dazzling color is just the beginning with this spectacular species of parrot. They have a personality bursting with charm and make themselves especially delightful to keep as pets. Raised properly and treated with respect they can be friendly and inquisitive as well as becoming a beloved companion.
In Fact....their endearing traits can be obvious and overwhelming; it might be tempting to overlook the loud noise for which they are so well-known. Their infamous Aratinga quality of being noisy can be irritating to many people. This should be taken seriously before adopting a Sun Conure into your home. There are many ways of dealing with their noise and a normal Sun Conure will not scream all day but they cannot be trained to be quiet so we must adapt to and accept this quality.
As Babies, Sun Conures start off rather quiet but somewhat early in life they begin laughing its a delightful noise and makes them appear very cheerful. (my African Grey Parrots mimic this laugh and we often get several birds all laughing at once). Baby Suns do start being loud even before they are fully weaned but this sound as with older sun conures is normally short lived and comes in spurts. They will be especially loud at feeding times or alert you to intruders and some birds will just shriek for your attention. It is important that you never give them attention (or any other reward) for being loud.
Offer your Sun Conure a wide assortment of safe toys and a play-gym as they are extraordinarily intelligent birds and require stimulation and interaction. Accept that your Sun Conure will make noise at certain times often in the morning and at dusk. They will also make noise if ignored or when you return home from work or school they are greeting you in the best way they know how. Say hello to your bird and let him/her know you are happy to see them too. Be careful not to reward the noise avoid taking your bird out of the cage as a reward instead try and let the bird out when it is quiet. Reward the quiet and always use positive reinforcement and lots of love and patience.
